New Summer Workshops Offered for Youths
Jun 7, 2010

Youths wanting to keep busy, have fun and learn all at the same time, are invited to register for one or more new workshops offered at Berkshire Community College at its main campus on West Street this summer.

The following workshops meet Monday through Friday, July 26 through July 30.

"Chemical Magic, Microscopes, Rocks & Minerals" (WKS 1236), is designed for youths ages 6 to 11, teaches participants to make batteries from fruits or potatoes. Students make a crystal tree, work with invisible ink and powerful magnets, and discuss different types of rocks and minerals. Youths can look at prepared slides using a microscope. Classes meet from 9 am to 12 noon.

"Blowfish Robocraft" (WKS 1237) will instruct youths to make, and take home, a Blowfish Robocraft with big, puffy cheeks. The craft is propelled by a motor and left/right moving tail. The workshop, which is designed for ages 7 to 12, teaches students about gears and circuits as they build the robot. Participants also build and design other robots that can perform many tasks. Classes meet from 12:45 pm to 3:45 pm.

The following workshops meet Monday through Friday, Aug. 16 through Aug. 20.

"Advanced Robotics" (WKS 1238) geared for ages 7 to 12, involves building an advanced level Jungle Robot, which students will then be able to take home. Youngsters learn how different gears mesh and are driven by a motor, and connect a motor, battery and microphone to a circuit board that will program a sound activated, hand clap, robot. Classes meet from 9 am to 12 noon.

"Prospector Mystery Rock" (WKS 1239) engages youths ages 7 to 12 in excavating for valuable gems, fascinating rocks, and ancient fossils. Students experience the thrill of discovery as they find 10 specimens in a Mystery Rock which they are allowed to keep. Classes meet from 12:45 pm to 3:45 pm.

These workshops are taught by Sciensational Workshops of Kids, Inc. and cost $145 per course. For more information, or to register, call BCC's office of LifeLong Learning at 413-236-2122.
