PITTSFIELD -- In response to the current economy and high unemployment rates, Berkshire Community College (BCC) is hosting several information sessions on Wednesday, July 14 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to provide the community with information on training the school offers in conjunction with Career Step, a leading online healthcare education company, for careers in the growing healthcare industry.
The current economy has reduced the number of jobs in many industries, resulting in some of the highest unemployment rates in decades. However, healthcare is one of the few bright spots as it is experiencing job growth despite the economy. The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the healthcare industry will create 3.2 million new jobs before 2018 and the majority of those jobs will require less than four years of college education.
Within the healthcare industry, the field of medical transcription is also individually growing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the medical transcription field will experience 11 percent employment growth between 2008 and 2018. The program offered at BCC provides those within the community the opportunity to quickly gain the education they need to qualify for these jobs.
"The field of Medical Transcription is fast growing and a very important part of the health care process. If you are focused, a good listener and can maintain attention to detail, this career may be for you," said William D. Mullholland, Dean of LifeLong Learning and Workforce Development at Berkshire Community College.
To educate the community on the growing field of medical transcription, BCC is holding several information sessions on Wednesday, July 14 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Berkshire Community College Intermodal Education Center at 1 Columbus Avenue in Pittsfield. These sessions will provide more information on the healthcare industry, medical transcription career, and the training program. Attendees will also learn more about the school's introductory free laptop offer for those who enroll in this new program. For more details on the information sessions, please visit CareerStep.com/bcc or call the Office of LifeLong Learning/Workforce Development at 413-236-2127.
