BCC to Host 10th Anniversary Not Your Average Dog Show
Jan 13, 2011

Dogs of any breed or mix, with or without credentials, will have a chance to be the center of attention on Sunday, Feb. 6 during the Berkshire Community College Foundation's tenth Anniversary "Not Your Average Dog Show."

Organizers specifically emphasize that the show is "not just for purebreds." The family-oriented event is scheduled from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM in the Paterson Field House on BCC's main campus, 1350 West Street, Pittsfield. Admission for spectators (humans and dogs) is free. Donations of any amount to benefit BCC students through the college's annual fund will be gladly accepted at the door.

Dogs participating in the show must be registered. Each dog may be entered in two categories. Because categories fill up fast, pre-registration is strongly recommended and costs $15 through Wednesday, Feb. 2. Starting on Thursday through the day of the show, the fee is $20. Registering a second dog in the same family costs $10.

Sample categories include "Best Trick," "Best Smile," "Best Dressed," "Best Hair," and "Mystery Mutt" where volunteer judges try to guess the breeds of the dogs. Category sponsors include Animal ER of the Berkshires, Berkshire Humane Society, The Clip Shop, Greylock Federal Credit Union, Dr. Ed Helitzer, Legacy Banks, and Hilltown Veterinary Clinic.

Vendors will have pet related items for sale and non-profit agencies will provide information pertaining to pet services. Refreshments will be offered for sale by the BCC LPN program. Dogs 10 years of age or older are invited to participate in the "parade for seniors" led by Boots the Fire Safety Dog in honor of the show's 10th anniversary. A raffle will feature many items and services donated by area veterinarians, product suppliers, and cultural attractions.

Christina Barrett, BCC's Director of Marketing and Public Relations will emcee, and Gene Dellea, president of the BCC Foundation, will be the ringmaster.

Dogs must be on a leash at all times. All dogs must have up-to-date rabies shot. Females in season should not participate. Handlers of spectator dogs must agree to event rules. The snow date for the event will be Feb. 13.
