BCC Student Recruiting Team Members, Raising Funds for Run to Home Base
May 9, 2014
Mark Lis, a full-time Berkshire Community College (BCC) student in the Business Software System program and a current reservist, is forming a team of walkers to represent BCC at the 5th annual Run to Home Base Presented by New Balance on Sat., July 19 in Boston.

The event, which starts and ends in historic Fenway Park with all participants crossing home plate, raises funds for the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program, which serves returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and families affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) through clinical care, community education and research.

The Home Base Program provides: clinical care and support services to service members and veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families who are affected by combat or deployment-related stress and/or traumatic brain injury; education for clinicians and the community about the "invisible wounds of war" and the challenges faced by military families; and research to improve the understanding and treatment of PTSD and TBI.

During Lis' 30-year military career, he served in Grenada, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He currently serves as a production superintendent at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Mass.

When BCC opened the College's Veterans Lounge in the fall 2013, representatives from the Home Base Program attended the dedication. Lis, who also attended the event, was so impressed with the organization's level of commitment to veterans that he felt the need to participate in the Run to Home Base event.
Last year, the event drew approximately 3,000 participants, including 500 active duty military members.

Lis is currently seeking teammates as well as donations. Those interested may contact Lis at or 413-212-6593 or Beth Wallace, BCC's director of student engagement who oversees the institution's Student Veterans Alliance, at 413-236-1662 or

Donations may also be made online at

Registration and event information for the 2014 Run to Home Base Presented by New Balance is available at Pre-registration and minimum fundraising commitment are required.
