| BCC is the lead agency of the Berkshire Tech Prep Consortium, a partnership among local colleges, Berkshire county public high schools, and area employers.
With funding recently re-authorized by the federal government, the new Tech Prep program focuses on linking high school and college career and technical vocational education programs, and providing targeted transition services to students that will increase their success in their postsecondary programs of study.
Tech Prep offers high school students an opportunity to explore career options in technical fields that may require a two- or four-year college degree, and to visit area colleges to learn more about the programs that interest them. Advanced technical instruction is also available through local apprenticeship training programs.
Beginning in high school, students map out an educational plan that combines strong academics with technical courses and/or work-based experiences. Many students may be able to receive college credit for some of their high school coursework under the terms of 2 + 2 articulation agreements between the college and their high school. These agreements result in non-duplicative programs of student wherein students earn BCC credit for their advanced high school coursework. High school students should speak with their guidance counselor about these opportunities.
Current BCC programs that may result in students earning college credit include: Allied Health, LPN, Business Administration, Business Careers, Business Software Systems, Computer Information Systems, Culinary Arts, Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, and Hospitality Administration. Select high schools also have agreements with other colleges in specific technical fields, such as automotive, carpentry, and horticulture.
High school students who participate in Tech Prep programs are also encouraged to participate in BCC's Dual Enrollment program during their junior or senior year as a way to earn college credit while exploring a potential career, or simply to get a jump start on college requirements.
For information or to inquire about eligibility for earning articulated college credit, please contact the BCC Tech Prep Director, Julie Hannum, via email at jhannum@berkshirecc.edu or by calling 413-236-2180.
