Digital Literacy

The program helps students develop both their English language and digital literacy skills. The Digital Literacy (formerly Computer Literacy) class is a project-based experience where students acquire knowledge through active participation, collaboration, and support.

Digital literacy is defined as the skills associated with using technology to enable users to find, evaluate, organize, create, and communicate information (U.S. Department of Education, 2015), and the ability to use those skills to solve problems in technology-rich environments (Leu, Kinzer, Coiro, Castek, & Henry, 2013).

English language skills and digital literacy are essential for obtaining and keeping a family-sustaining job, supporting children in school, participating in community life, obtaining community services, and accessing further education and training.

The Digital Literacy class focuses on:
  • using basic digital literacy skills,
  • creating and communicating information online,
  • finding and evaluating information online.
