What is MassTransfer?
MassTransfer is a statewide transfer policy that was approved by Board of Higher Education in 2008. If you are transferring from one Massachusetts public higher education institution to another, the MassTransfer policy will make the process easier.
MassTransfer has two main purposes:
- Provide community college students, who complete associate degrees and enroll in linked MassTransfer programs, with full transfer of credit, guaranteed admission, and a tuition discount (each based on final GPA).
- Provide any student in the Massachusetts public higher education system who completes the Gen Ed Foundation with the benefit of satisfying the general education/distribution/core requirements at any other public higher education institution (with the receiving institution able to add no more than six additional credits or two courses).
An extension of the MassTransfer Program, The Commonwealth Commitment is a Massachusetts initiative that makes it easier and more affordable than ever for Massachusetts residents to earn a bachelor’s degree in one of seventeen sponsored programs of study.

The Gen Ed Foundation
The Gen Ed Foundation is a set of 34 credits that is accepted at our community colleges, state universities and University of Massachusetts campuses. Students completing an associate degree program under MassTransfer will graduate with a minimum of 60 credit hours and complete the following 34-credit general education foundation, exclusive of developmental coursework.
Students will be provided with the benefit of satisfying the general education/distribution core requirements at any other public higher education institution (with the receiving institution able to add no more than six additional credits or two courses).

*NOTE: All Associate in Arts programs and some Associate in Science programs at BCC require the mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning completion of two 4-credit laboratory sciences.
Stipulation: Students enrolled in a specific major or degree program may be required to take additional courses if these courses are specifically required for the major or program and are required of native students.
