Support Food Security for BCC students by telling our representatives to fund student food security!

Senator Lovely has filed amendment #647 to fund the Hunger Free Campus Initiative in the FY25 state budget at $2M. The race for co-sponsors is on! Let’s make sure our senators know how important it is to ensure the growing number of food-insecure public college students have the food they need to thrive.

The HFCC + MASSPIRG Students are hosting 2 virtual call-ins this week: Wednesday at 1:30-2:30 and Friday 11am-12pm (yes, they are advocating for college hunger investments during exams!) Stay tuned for zoom invitations. All are welcome to drop into the Zoom at this time and ask any questions about the initiative, how to reach your Senator, find out if your Senator has supported in the past, the impact this funding has had for students, and general advocacy tips.

Senators have until Tuesday, May 21st when the Senate kicks off budget deliberations to co-sponsor the amendment.  Students and advocates can send a quick email to their Senators using MASSPIRG’s advocacy tool here. Or, call your State Senator and use the sample script below:

“Hello, this is a message for Senator  _____. My name is _____ and I live/work in ____.   I'm calling to urge you to co-sponsor Senator Lovely’s amendment #647 which provides $2M in the FY25 budget for the Hunger Free Campus Initiative.  This allows public, state, and minority-serving institutions in MA to tackle hunger on campus for the growing number of food-insecure students through sustainable and successful initiatives that boost student access to federal nutrition benefits like SNAP and WIC. Our college students are our future leaders, and we need to make sure their basic needs are met.  I appreciate your consideration. Thank you!”

Let's get a strong list of co-sponsors from across the state to show that the Senate cares about hunger on campus. Thank you for all of your support for this initiative!
