Diversity Film Series: When the Mountains Tremble
Pamela Yates' 1984 film documents the struggle to overthrow the military junta that was systematically murdering hundreds of thousands of people in Guatemala. Ms. Yates had unprecedented access to both the rebels and the military leaders. Rigoberta Menchu, the peasant who became a leader in the struggle for the rights of the indigenous Mayan population, and later, in 1992, received the Nobel Peace Prize, narrates the film. This documentary is now being used as evidence in the war crimes trial of junta leader, General Rios Montt. Ms. Yates will talk about her work at the November 27 forum, "The Making of Granito". Sponsored by the Committee for Diversity. Forum credit available.
