Danielle is only seven, but has already been in several fiddle contests.  She's been playing the violin in both the classical and fiddle styles for a little over a year and a half.  The time she spends practicing may also be helping her academically.

Research has shown that there is a correlation between the acquisition of music skills and math achievement.    Gordon Shaw at the University of California-Irvine and Frances Rauscher from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh found that just ten minutes spent listening to Mozart  improved students' abilities to perform certain spatial-reasoning tasks.   Another study, published in 1996 in the journal Nature, revealed that first graders who received music instruction enhanced their sequential skill development, performing better on tests.  How?  It appears that music training can condition the brain to do tasks similar to those it has to do when working on math problems.

Unfortunately, the first programs to be cut in public schools are the arts, including music.  The photographer was female.
