New Course Offered This Spring

Berkshire Community College will offer the following new course at its Main Campus on West Street this spring.

"Tropical Seminar: Working With Elders" (HSV 197B), a three credit course, prepares human services students and professionals to work with elders in the community. The course utilizes universal design (UDL) techniques in the delivery of content as well as provides students with UDL techniques that assist in addressing the issues and challenges of the elder population. Topics include: healthy aging, health and medical issues, effective ways of communicating, Alzheimer's and related dementias, cultural and ethical issues, working in long term care and assisted living facilities, caregivers and family members. Guest speakers from agencies and organizations working with elders in our community will address topics of polypharmacy, local resources and protections, caregivers and bereavement.

The course was developed and is taught by Joan Nimmo, a licensed clinical independent social worker with years of experience in the field. Presently Nimmo is a Private Geriatric Care Manager who provides support and counseling for her clients in their homes. Her experience includes social worker with a community agency, director of an Alzheimer's Unit in an assisted living facility, director of Social Services in a local nursing home and extensive work with the Alzheimer's Association of Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
