The following workshops will be offered at the South County Center of Berkshire Community College (BCC) this spring...(more)
"Antiques 101" (WKS-2100) teaches participants the language of antiques, the methods of buying and selling and the legal requirements with which a dealer is confronted. The evolution of the designs of 18th and 19th century furniture and other decorative arts, as well as the auction and appraisal processes, will be covered. Classes meet Wednesday, Feb. 2 through March 30, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Cost for registration is $150.
"Create a ‘Cactus Flower' Quilt" (WKS-1551) explores hand-or machine-appliqué and indulges in color-play to help students work "find its voice." Participants create a quilt from a pattern the instructor designed for this class after a trip to the desert, or from a 1940s-style "Cactus Flower" block. Finish a wall quilt in this time, or get a large quilt off to a good start. Classes meet Thursday, Feb. 3 through March 3, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Cost for registration is $60.
"Painting Winter Landscapes in the Studio" (WKS-1584), a new workshop, is designed for people who always wanted to paint the beautiful clear crisp colors of winter but were prevented by the weather outdoors. In the warmth of the studio students explore the contrast of pines against the stark white snow and its subtle variation. Classes meet Thursday, Feb. 10 through March 31, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Cost for registration is $225.
"The Fictionalized Memoir" (WKS-962) is a combination of memoir writing plus the use of fictional devices. Writers will be given weekly exercises to help develop their fictionalized memoir. These pieces will be read aloud and critiqued every week in an intimate, supportive atmosphere. Classes meet Thursday, Feb. 10 through April 21, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Cost for registration is $225.
"Introduction to Photography" (WKS-2235) designed for the enthusiastic beginner, focuses on the essentials necessary to get started in the photographic process. Participants learn to manually create a correct exposure using aperture, shutter speed and ISO. They are introduced to the full range of camera basics from image capture and editing to different file type, film and workflow issues. Students learn methods for composing, printing, and storage. Participants must bring their digital or film SLR, or point and shoot camera (with manual), and paper for printing photographs. Classes meet Thursday, Feb. 24 through March 24, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Cost for registration is $125.
