OLLI at BCC Announces One Million Dollar Gift
Feb 11, 2011
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Berkshire Community College (BCC) announced this morning that it had received a one million dollar endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation. This is the second of two one million dollar endowments from the Foundation, the first of which was awarded in May 2009.

"This program at BCC has earned the distinction of being one of only a handful of {OLLI} programs at colleges around the country that have been recognized by the Osher Foundation at the two million dollar level," stated Dr. Paul Raverta, BCC's President.

OLLI at BCC is a membership-led organization committed to the idea that learning is a lifelong, multifaceted experience. It offers courses, lectures, trips and special events year-round. Courses run in fall, winter, spring and summer semesters. This endowment for OLLI at BCC was contingent on it reaching a critical mass of 1,000 members. Interest earned from the endowment is designated for the development, support and implementation of non-credit educational courses and programming for "mature adult" learners living in and around Berkshire County.

Dr. Howard Arkans, Board President of OLLI at BCC recognized the Osher Foundation for their support through this second endowment. "...I would like to acknowledge the wonderful philanthropy of Bernard and Barbro Osher, their contributions to lifelong learning in this country are legendary and their generosity contributes to the value of all of our lives."

The endowment will be invested with the Berkshire Community College Foundation as was the first million dollar gift.

"...We are in a position to accept, and help manage, this wonderful gift to support the OLLI program," said Eugene Dellea, President of the BCC Foundation. "While use of this the interest from the endowment is restricted for OLLI, it certainly helps grow the assets of the {BCC} Foundation."

The Bernard Osher Foundation is a national organization that supports 118 OLLI programs on university and college campuses across the country, with at least one program in each of the 50 states (plus the District of Columbia).

More information on OLLI at BCC can be found online at or by contacting Barbara Hochberg, executive director, at 413-236-2192.
