BCC to Display "Art of the Book" Downtown
Mar 16, 2011
Berkshire Community College (BCC) will present the exhibit "Art of the Book: Visual Arts Class Projects" from April 1 to April 30 at the Intermodal Gallery on the corner of North St. and Columbus Ave. in Pittsfield. Gallery hours are from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

The show features student work from classes taught by Professors Benigna Chilla and Lisa Griffith. The student had to manipulate hardcover books, while folding each page several times, so that the book woud open up, fan-life to 180 degrees. The hardcover became a base for the sculptural form of these folded pages, which now had to be integrated. Paint and other collage material were added to complete the new three-dimensional book-form.

The exhibit is presented in connection with Pittsfield Reads!, a community reading project focusing this year on Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. Named for the temperature at which paper ignites, this story about a futuristic book-burning society compels us to think about everything books represent, including their physical form.

Pittsfield Reads! is a grant-funded program designed to bring local residents closer together through the reading of a particular book. Now in its fourth year in Pittsfield, the program features a variety of activities taking place throughout the city in April. Please visit for more information.  BCC is a community partner in Pittsfield Reads!

A reception will be held in the gallery from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM on Thurs., April 7. The public is encouraged to attend.
