BCC Finishes Third in RecycleMania Competition
Apr 25, 2011
Berkshire Community College (BCC) has finished third out of 26 colleges in Massachusetts in its competition in the RecycleMania contest. Nationwide, BCC made its goal of breaking into the top 30, coming in at number 26 out of a final listing of 288 colleges.

This is the fourth year BCC has participated in the competition amongst hundreds of colleges and universities across the continent. Last year the college entered the "elite" Competition Division and finished 39 out of 267 schools.

Chris Laney, professor of history and co-leader of BCC's RecycleMania efforts, points to a few on-campus initiatives that helped the institution meet its top 30 goal.

"Courtesy of the college's facilities staff and Coca-Cola, we have stationed new outdoor bottle/can bins throughout the campus, in addition to a few hundred existing bins, and removed trash cans from most classrooms," said Laney. "In talking with folks at other colleges, it seems that BCC has higher number of recycling bins than other campuses which means that it is easier for people to ‘do the right thing' here at our institution."

BCC's Green Team also posts a "Green Tip of the Week" on its blog found at to educate students, staff and the community on ways they too can reduce their carbon footprint.

The contest, which ran from February 6 through April 2, encouraged the BCC Community to use the proper recycle bins on campus for paper, cans and bottles. The contest also measured how much waste is reduced by finding ways to reduce paper such as forms and handouts.
