The BCC Players Present “R.U.R.”
Nov 7, 2011
The BCC Players will open their 2011-2012 season with a production of Karl Capek's R.U.R., or Rossum's Universal Robots). R.U.R. was written in 1920 and premiered in Prague early in 1921. The play was performed in New York in 1922 and published in English translation in 1923. Virtually every encyclopedia or textbook etymology of the word "robot" mentions the play R.U.R. The Czech word robota means "drudgery" or "servitude"; a robotnik is a peasant or serf. Although the term today conjures up images of clanking metal contraptions, Capek's Robots are more accurately the product of what would now be termed genetic engineering.

The production is being given a "Steampunk" treatment by director/set designer Sam Slack. Technical direction is provided by Kevin McGerigle, BCC's new theatre manager/technical director. A cast of 18 BCC students and alumni will perform R.U.R., including Riley Sexton, Caitlyn Mazzacano, John Kight, Lindsay DeWinkeleer, Tony Corbett, James Witherell, Peter Mitchell, Julius Reese, Christopher Dellea, Brittany Nicholson, Will Demick, Becky Sterpka, John Besaw, Athena Kahn, Andrea Moreau and Simon Weeks.

Performances will take place on Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19, at 8 PM and on Sunday, November 20 at 2 PM in the Boland Theatre at Berkshire Community College. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for students, staff, and senior citizens. Tickets will be available at the door 30 minutes before performances or may be reserved by calling the BCC Box Office at (413) 499-0886 starting November 7.
