BCC Art Gallery to Feature ‘Photo Show'
Jan 20, 2012
"Photo Show," an exhibit by Larry Goldberg, is on display now through February 23 at Berkshire Community College's (BCC) gallery at the Intermodal Transportation Center on the corner of North St. and Columbus Ave. in Pittsfield.

Goldberg states: "In 2004, on the way back from NYC to my home in Williamstown, I stopped at Venamy Orchids in Brewster. They were selling large cyclamen orchids that had just finished blooming for $32. I bought one - my first orchid purchase. A year later the plant produced beautiful flowers that I had to take photos of. Today I own 33 orchid plants and have taken over 3000 photos of orchids and other flowers!

Part of the art of taking flower photos is picking the right flowers. A beautiful flower might turn into a beautiful photo. Almost all my flower photos are done with natural lighting. However, after the photo has been taken, I enjoy trying to get the most out of the photo with unnatural means - Photoshop and other software.

Having a passion for abstract art (I also paint), I sometimes will transform my flower photos with software into totally abstract works of art. Also, I sometimes will take one of my abstract paintings and take a photo of it and then transform the photo into a different work of art."

Larry Goldberg started teaching philosophy and humanities courses at BCC in 1977. He also taught at SVC and MCLA. He grew up in Williamstown and graduated from Mt. Greylock Regional High School in 1967. He studied at the University of Rochester, the University of Miami, Florida and the University of London King's College.
