‘disPLAY' on Exhibit at BCC
Feb 22, 2012

"disPLAY", an exhibit by Jelena Opacic, will be presented in the Koussevitzky Art Gallery at Berkshire Community College (BCC) from Monday, February 27 through Thursday, March 29.  Click here for poster display.

Jelena Opacic received her B.A from the Royal Art Academy, The Hague, The Netherlands in 2008, and a M.F.A. from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany in 2011.

Opacic states "A naked person (in costume) walks around an art museum. A fashionable woman sits in a hospital waiting room wearing a hat composed of bandages. A woman in a neon burqa walks on a street. A bruised woman boards a bus. They are all me. When I join diverse social groups I investigate their traditional models of visual display. It fascinates me how clothes and appearances can create or break the rules governing their environment. I examine aesthetic and ethical models of approaching everyday activities by communicating with the costumes that I design for specific public places. The costumes simultaneously embrace and conflict established aesthetic values and they disable the expectations of those I encounter. The dose of doubt that people have might instigate revisiting the proliferation of prejudices and cultural norms."

"I perform within the private spaces of my life. Likewise, an artistic state of mind often guides my daily life. Whether the personas I adopt are alternate identities or more extreme expressions of my own, is still mysterious to me. Certainly, my motivation corresponds to the exalted art objective: to stimulate viewing prosaic activities through alternative lenses and to reveal sublime and significant moments in our routines."

Opacic will discuss the exhibit Thursday, March 29 at 12:15 PM in K-111 on BCC's main campus. Forum credit is available for BCC students attending this discussion.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. The gallery is located in BCC's Koussevitzky Arts Center. Gallery hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
