The first annual Berkshire Orchid and Tropical Show will be held at Berkshire Community College (BCC), October 12 through October 14, at the Paterson Field House, 1350 West Street in Pittsfield.
The weekend is a celebration of orchids, succulents, bromeliads, bonsai and other tropical plants, featuring unique plant and artwork displays, workshops and talks. Vendors will be selling a variety of orchids and other tropical plants and related accessories.
The weekend kicks off with a preview party, Friday, October 12, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, with a wine and beer tasting hosted by Kelly's Package Store, a silent auction and live music. Tickets for the party begin at $30 and can be purchased at www.berkshirecc.edu/orchid, or by calling 413-236-2185.
The show and sale will be held Saturday, October 13, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Sunday, October 14, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Light refreshments will be available for purchase at a concession run by BCC's Theatre Arts students. Plants and other items will be raffled throughout both days and attendees can enter to win a free door prize.
Workshops are free with show admission. The workshop schedule is as follows:
Saturday: "Native Orchids" presented by Nancy Goodman, 9:30 AM and 3:00 PM and "Growing Bromeliads" presented by David Burdick, 1:30 PM.
Sunday: "Creating an Orchid Terrarium" presented by Black Jungle Terrarium Supply, 2:00 PM; "You bought it, you bloomed it, now what? Tips for re-blooming orchids" presented by Rob Gennari, 12:30 PM and "Introduction to Dish Gardens" presented by Jeanine Loya, 11:00 AM.
Admission is $4. Children 12 and under are Free. Any student with a valid ID, and members of the Berkshire Museum, Berkshire Botanical Garden, or Greylock Federal Credit Union receive $1 off Admission.
In conjunction with the event, the Berkshire Museum is presenting a special exhibition showcasing images of the elegant, elusive orchid, opening October 12 through December 9. Attendees of the Berkshire Orchid and Tropical Show may show their program at the Berkshire Museum, October 13 & 14, to receive $1 off admission.
