CREATOR OF CHILDREN’S SONGS FROM AFGHANISTAN TO SPEAK AT BCC
Feb 27, 2014
Berkshire Community College's (BCC) Diversity Committee will present a FORUM with Dr. Louise Pascale on Tues., March 11 at 12:15 p.m. in the SBA Lounge located at the college's main campus at 1350 West St. in Pittsfield.

Pascale, an associate professor in the Creative Arts in Learning Division at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, has worked in the field of arts and education for more than 25 years.

While serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the late 1960's, Pascale lived in Kabul, Afghanistan and worked with Afghan poets and musicians to create a children's songbook to be distributed to the schools in Kabul. Once she collected the songs, she traveled to schools and taught them to the children and had them draw pictures to go with each song. In 1968 the songbook with the children's illustrations was published by the Kabul Press.

In 2003, she discovered a faded copy of the songbook and realized that her copy was likely the last one in existence due to the turmoil and strife that had afflicted Afghanistan. She made a commitment to return the songs, now almost completely lost from the culture, back to the children of Afghanistan.

Afghan children with their songbooks

Pascale and others worked tirelessly to create a songbook, Qu Qu Qu Barg-e-Chinaar: Children's Songs from Afghanistan, which contains a CD of sixteen songs and an accompanying booklet with the lyrics and original children's drawings. Today, Afghan women use the songbook to share the songs with their children. Teachers use the songbook as a literacy tool.

The FORUM is free and open to the public.
