Diversity Film Series: The Lady
This feature film stars Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, whose father, Aung San, was elected to head the country of Burma (a.k.a. Myanmar) and then assassinated, leaving the nation to a long period of repressive dictatorship under a military junta. Suu Kyi became a leader of the democracy movement and was kept under house arrest for 15 years. It was not until 2012 that open elections were permitted, at which time her movement swept into power, and Suu Kyi was elected a member of Parliament. Shortly thereafter, President Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Myanmar, going there to support Suu Kyi and the country's move towards democratic reform. Sponsored by the Committee for Diversity. Forum credit available.
