Support Food Security for BCC students by telling our representatives to fund student food security!

On April 10, the House Ways and Means Committee released its proposal for the FY25 state budget which did not include funding for the Hunger Free Campus Initiative, unfortunately. But fear not — there are a few more steps in the budget process at which we have a shot at securing funding!

Representative James Arena-DeRosa (D-Holliston), longtime human rights advocate and regional USDA Food and Nutrition Service administrator, has filed an amendment for the Hunger Free Campus Initiative, Amendment #134 for $1M for the Hunger Free Campus Initiative. A big thank you to the Rep for leading on this budget initiative!

Now is the time to call your state Representative and urge them to co-sponsor Rep Arena-DeRosa's amendment #134 for college hunger.  Or, email the attached amendment one-pager to your Representative!  In addition to the script below, you can highlight that according to a survey administered by the Hope Center in 2023, 40% of BCC students who replied said they have experienced food insecurity in the previous month.

For Berkshire, Hampden, Franklin and Hampshire you can call Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier at 413-442-4300 or Email her at tricia.farley-bouvier@mahouse.gov

Sample phone script (Can modify to email):

"Hello, this is a message for Representative  _____. My name is _____ and I live/work in ____.   I'm calling to urge you to co-sponsor amendment #134 which provides $1M in the FY25 budget for the Hunger Free Campus Initiative.  This allows public, state, and minority-serving institutions in MA to tackle hunger on campus for the growing number of food-insecure students through sustainable and successful initiatives that boost student access to federal nutrition benefits like SNAP and WIC. Our college students are our future leaders, and we need to make sure their basic needs are met.  We appreciate your consideration. Thank you!"

You can also email and call Senator Paul Mark.  Ask him to include $2M for the Hunger Free Campus Initiatives in the Senate Ways and Means FY25 budget. You can highlight that according to a survey administered by the Hope Center in 2023, 40% of BCC students who replied said they have experienced food insecurity in the previous month. Call: 413-464-5635, Email: Paul.Mark@masenate.gov

Let's get a strong list of co-sponsors from across the state to show that the House cares about hunger on campus. Thank you for all of your support for this initiative!
