More than three tons of paper, the equivalent to 65 trees worth of pulp, were shredded at Berkshire Community College’s (BCC) Community Shredding Event held this past Saturday.
The event, sponsored by the BCC Green Team and Valley Shredding of Westfield, Mass., drew area residents along with faculty and staff from BCC. The BCC Green Team serves as a coordinating and advisory body to help BCC meet goals of developing a comprehensive plan to achieve zero waste and to create institutional structures to guide the development and implementation of sustainable and green practices.
Community shredding events divert hundreds of tons of sensitive paper documents from landfills. The shredded paper will be recycled as opposed to incinerated or dumped into a landfill.
Those dropping off documents to be shredded were asked to donate non-perishable food or canned goods – resulting in more than 120 items that will be donated to local charities.
