How to Copy and Paste

If there is one handy technology skill to know it's how to copy and paste. Copy and paste give you the ability to quickly move small or large amounts of text or images without having to retype. Mastering this skill will save you tons of time!

Some common copy and paste uses:
Copy and paste large blocks of text into a Moodle quiz, assignment, or discussion post
Copy and paste web addresses to not only save time, but also reduce errors
Copy and paste images from one location to another and skip saving a file

How to Copy and Paste on a Windows PC

  1. Highlight the text you wish to copy

    NOTE:Most text is easily highlighted by clicking and dragging your mouse, you should see a box appear around the selected text

  2. Press the Ctrl + C keys on your keyboard to copy it

    TIP: Hold the Ctrl key and then tap on C

  3. Navigate to the location you wish to paste, it could be in the same document, in a different program, or in an another browser tab
  4. Click in the location you want to paste so that the blinking cursor appears
  5. Press Ctrl + V on your keyboard to paste

    TIP: You can repeat step 5 as many times as you want to paste over and over again

How to Copy and Paste on a Mac

  1. Highlight the text you wish to copy

    NOTE:Most text is easily highlighted by clicking and dragging your mouse, you should see a box appear around the selected text

  2. Press the Command + C keys on your keyboard to copy it

    NOTE: The Command key also has the following symbol on it: Command Key

    TIP: Hold the Command key and then tap on C

  3. Navigate to the location you wish to paste, it could be in the same document, in a different program, or in an another browser tab
  4. Click in the location you want to paste so that the blinking cursor appears
  5. Press Command + V on your keyboard to paste

    TIP: You can repeat step 5 as many times as you want to continue to paste over and over again

NOTE: While you can also copy and paste using the right-click menu on your mouse, this doesn't always work in every location such as in Moodle. In that case, use the keyboard shortcuts above.
