Humanities, Behavioral and Social Sciences

The Humanities Behavioral and Social Sciences (HBSS) Division oversees certificates and programs in Criminal Justice, Education, Fine and Performing Arts, Human Services, and Liberal Arts. Courses in our General Education curriculum, particularly in the areas of English Composition/Writing, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Communications, and Humanities and Fine Arts, are taught by faculty members in this division. The HBSS Division manages the Boland Theatre, the Recording Studio, and several grants.

The Nursing, Health and Wellness (NHW) Division oversees certificates and programs in Allied Health, Fire Science, Health Science, Medical Coding, and Nursing, many of which are accredited by national and state professional organizations. Accreditation ensures students’ successful employability and requires a higher level of student and program learning outcomes assessment. The NHW Division manages labs for Nursing, Massage Therapy, Physical Therapy Assistant, and Respiratory Care as well as several grants.

The Science and Business (SB) Division oversees certificates and programs in Business, Computer Information Systems, Culinary, Engineering and Engineering Technology, Environmental Sciences, and Natural and Physical Sciences. Courses in our General Education curriculum, particularly in the areas of Math and Natural and/or Physical Sciences, are taught by faculty members in this division. The SB Division manages science labs, the Berkshire Science Commons, as well as several grants.

    These are special sections of regularly scheduled courses that are reserved exclusively for honors students. They cover the same material as non-honors sections and fulfill the same requirements, but involve deeper and more independent work.

  • Teaching and Learning Innovation Division

    The Division of Teaching and Learning Innovation (TLI) supports faculty in designing active, engaging, student-centered and equitable learning experiences at Berkshire Community College.  This includes professional development and consultation, as well as offering a catalog of online resources and reflective activities. The five staff in the Division support creativity in pedagogical and technological choices that center students’ learning and experiences.

  • Division of Library and Learning Commons

    The Division of Library and Learning Commons (LLC) oversees the Library, the Digital Commons, the Testing Center, and Tutoring Services. In addition to physical books, the library also has two group study areas for students, individual study carrels, an archival collection, eBooks, and access to over 100 online databases. Digital Commons provides online and in-person technology support for students and creates and maintains student-facing online resources for students. The Testing Center staff proctor Accuplacer, HiSet, CLEP, and GED exams as well as testing accommodations.  Tutorial Services supports students' success through workshops, skills sessions, small group tutoring, individual tutoring, and access to online remote tutoring outside of regular center hours.

  • Honors Opportunities and Recognition

    BCC recognizes the achievements of its students via the Dean’s list and Graduation Honors. In the spring, Academic Affairs celebrates academic achievement at an annual Falconer and Academic Excellence Awards event. Students are recognized for their outstanding service and / or excellence in academic studies. 

    BCC participates in the Berkshire Honors Scholar Program, a program that provides a creative and challenging student-driven experience, designed for highly motivated students who want to realize their full potential pursuing the highest level of academic achievement possible at BCC. We are also a member of the Commonwealth Honors Program. Students who fulfill the Berkshire Honors Scholar graduation requirements and are accepted to any Commonwealth Honors Program member institution are guaranteed admission to the honors program at that school.

    Phi Theta Kappa is the BCC's chapter known as Xi Alpha. The purpose of this society is to recognize and encourage scholarship among junior and community college students. Students are provided with leadership opportunities and are encouraged to participate in community service projects.

  • Bridge to College

    The Bridge to College program, led by the Executive Director of Academic Operations, Planning, and Assessment, offers high school and home school students from Berkshire County the opportunity to earn college credit before graduation through dual enrollment and concurrent enrollment courses. Dual enrollment involves a high school student enrolling in a college course for credit with a BCC professor, in any format offered by BCC. Concurrent enrollment involves a high school student enrolling in a course taught at their high school by a high school teacher who has had their teaching credentials and course syllabus approved for college credit. Students eligible for Bridge to College programs can take up to 15 credits with BCC for free in the Fall and Spring Terms.  BCC has been granted official designation by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education as Early College partners with Pittsfield High School and Taconic High School.
